I am very concerned that we should understand the PURE HELL which is about to be unleashed in Iraq, and the gross hypocrisy behind it. Here is a great Pilger article about just that.
You will of course be aware of the space shuttle tragedy. One aspect of this tragedy, if you stop and think about it, is the unequal measure of a human life. By any measure, it is clear that an American or Israeli life is worth a great deal… just turn on the TV news tonight and see. With all respect to the dead, you and I will be sick and tired of hearing about NASA and space shuttles by the time this is all over.
However, an innocent Palestinian child on the wrong side of an Israeli missile is worthless. At least if media and government concern is any indication. Even a dead UN worker in Jenin, shot by out-of-control Israeli soldiers, is apparently worth nothing. Well, did you know about him?!
In a matter of weeks, the US, Britain and Australia will unleash pure hell on the Iraqi population. People who you will never see on the news. You won’t know their names; you won’t see their faces. There won’t be cuts to family members weeping uncontrollably, or saying brave and noble things about the deceased.
The military men who carpet bomb these poor people will come home heroes, even though these weapons and methods of mass destruction ensure they also will never see any faces of Iraqi women and children. Indeed they may believe - if they’re dumb enough - that their targets were all military. Either way they’ll never know!
I could go on, but I really think Pilger is far more able than I to convey the horror and the gross injustice of what is about to unfold.
Please take the time to print this out and read it.
I’d welcome any feedback. (If you want to bag me for apparent anti-semitism or anti-Americanism, don’t waste your time. I respect both nations deeply. I just find their leaders’ actions and strategies totally unconscionable.)
