There was a church leaders’ pre-release screening at the Jam Factory cinemas on Friday morning and I went with a YWAM delegation. Man! It was a Who’s Who of the Melbourne church scene.
The movie was a cinematigraphic delight. Apparently Mel designed it with Carvaggio artwork in mind. Now I know nothing about Carvaggio, but the film is amazing precisely in that it blends such visual beauty with such brutality.
The film definitely is very violent in places. And as for intensity it never lets up. But at the end of the film I was ready to stand up and yell, “YOU DID IT!” In celebration of the endurance of Christ. The film shows how awfully long and drawn out the “trial” was and the process of getting the Lord to the cross took a long time, and traumatic all the way.
I loved the film and I think it has only strengthened my love for the Lord. But for non-Christians who see the film with free frirm preconceptions, I do hope it elicits some great questions, with passionate, compassionate Christians there to answer sensitively.
That’s all that will be required. The movie puts Jesus centre-stage. The rest might well prove to be, all things considered, easy!
