I don’t understand Google. But I like ‘em!
They benched my business site in their sandbox for a few months for a hidden div with links in it – fair enough – then let it free again recently.
And it goes straight back up to a PR6. Backlinks – according to Google – barely exist.
I used to have hundreds of incoming links from all over the place, but the sites in question are mostly revised or gone… in any case I would have thought the incoming links would have been wiped out.
So does Google just have a really long memory?
Dunno.

you were wondering... I believe in rewarding commenters!
PageRank has been getting increasingly irrational. I keep getting calls and emails from people who think they have an SEO emergency because their PR dropped like a rock. Then I ask how their actual traffic and SERP performance is doing and they calm down. Then they get very confused – especially when I explain how infrequently it is updated.
Hello Alister,
PR is a combination of many factors and not only depends on backlinks number. It is backlink quality and organic traffic your site generates along with the age of the site. So I feel that you scored good on these factors.
Seems it got back being a pr2 now. Weird. Do you get links back from your clients?
@SEO expert:
I never heard PR was related to the age or to the organic traffic of your site. Rankings are dependent of the age of your site (sandbox). They might also be related do w. some behavioral metrics ( time on site, branded traffic : Panda) but I doubt it is the case for the PageRank.
My website is still relatively new but fingers crossed I will have at least a PR 3 within a year.
