I have a thought: With your original implementation couldn't you just add an additional same image (NOT IN A FORM Field) and with creative CSS position it so absolutely so it would be over the form field that should display it? Would that work? Then Safari would display the image where it doesn't honor the form field image and the browsers that do honor the form field image would simply have another absolutely positioned over it?????
